A Word from Senator Eamonn Coughlan

The 'Points for Life' initiative developed out of my concerns regarding the standards of physical literacy among children.

I, with members of the Professional Development Service for Teachers will be working with a small cohort of schools in the Wicklow area during the 2013-2014 academic year to develop and refine ‘Points for Life’. We will be learning from the teachers and their pupils about what works best in a range of educational contexts and the blog aims to share that learning process with others who are interested. I hope you find it useful.

‘Points for Life’ is a project which is to focus on developing physical literacy in primary aged children. The pilot project will run over the academic year 2013/2014. Wicklow was chosen for representative sampling purposes and it involves four primary schools who applied to be involved.

In the main, the project is to be organised on a whole school basis. Each school, through the school self-evaluation process, will target aspects of physical literacy which require most attention in their individual case. Over this year, the focus will be on developing physical literacy in the context of physical education lessons.

Teachers will be guided and supported through this process by the Professional Development Service for Teachers. The project is to be externally evaluated by a Physical Education Physical Activity Youth Sport research team.
