Parents' Activities Committee
Welcome back everyone ! We hope that you're all settling back into routine (that goes for the boys too !!). Didn't the summer fly by, or was that just in my house ! Firstly, we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone for all the time and effort that was put into last year's fundraising events. Over the course of the year we raised a substantial amount of money which has been spent on kitting out a new, state-of-the-art computer room. This has been money extremely well spent and it is all down to your great efforts. However, now it's time to replenish our funds !
We had our first meeting of the year in early September. We would like to thank all the past members of the committee for all their time and help over the years, all the present members for returning and we would like to welcome all the new members. For the first time since I've been involved in the PAC, we had our meeting in a classroom to cater for the large numbers present - thanks to all for coming. If there are more parents out there that would like to get involved, please come and join us. We meet in the school on the first Tuesday of each month.
At the end of last year we organised a second-hand book sale for school-books. This proved to be a great success. We recycled books for the pupils and returned over €1,500 to parents. We are presently looking into the possibility of starting a book rental scheme, but as there is a huge outlay for this we would need to be sure of our finances and exactly what is involved. We have a team looking into this at the moment, so if it turns out to be feasible we can have it in place for this time next year. We will let you know during the year how this venture develops.
We are completely aware that this year, even more so than in the past, people are struggling due to the economic climate. Therefore as a committee, we are trying to lighten the load and the additional pressure that fundraising can have on families in St. Cronan's. We have a few events organised for September and October that will hopefully only cost you a few hours of your time and maybe €1/€2 from your son's pocket money. They are as follows:
First up is our Cake Sale on Wednesday the 29th September. We are really on a learning curve with this one. For our first sale we asked for fairy cakes and received loads (but parents came along looking for big cakes); for our second venture we asked for big and small cakes and we received loads of big cakes (which didn't go down too well with the boys !). We had to run to Tesco a few times to replenish our stocks so that the kids weren't disappointed !! Regardless of what you can donate it will be gratefully received. If you have a few hours on that day, please come along as your help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully we will see you there.
In recent years, we have undertaken a number of bag packs in local supermarkets. We have found this to be a great way of raising funds without having any outlay of money. All we ask is for a few hours of your time; a number of the teachers have also assisted us in this type of fund raising in the past. The dates we have organised for this year are the 21st, 22nd and 23rd October for Tesco in Bray (Bank Holiday weekend for maximum impact !) and the 18th November for Dunnes, Cornelscourt.
Parents will be informed in advance of any event that we organise through a note home from the school. In asking for your help, all we ask is that you bear in mind that everything that you do for the school benefits your child in the long run !
As a committee we would like to reiterate that if you have any suggestions, issues or questions that you would like us to raise to the principal or the board of management please feel free to do so. Our objective as a committee is to be the voice of the parents and we hope that you avail of our time and commitment.
