17th December '10

Dear Parents / Guardians,

The weather has somewhat reflected the past four months in the school. A balmy autumn saw the arrival of a mobile recording studio from Galicia to record our 5th and 6th class pupils in making a CD of songs with Donal Lunny as part of our Comenius project. Thanks to the intense work put in by teachers and pupils the finished product is really beautiful and a worthy memento of our partnership with the schools in Galicia and Manchester. Featuring songs in Galego, Irish and English, the pupils are accompanied by world renowned musicians from Ireland, Manchester and Galicia. An hour long DVD accompanies the CD and the production by Casa de Tolos in Nigran is very professionally done. The CD/DVD will be available from the school soon.

In contrast to the beginning of the term, the arrival of arctic weather has been a challenge for us all. Balancing the requirement to open the school with health and safety concerns is not always straightforward, especially when making the call the evening before. On the one hand the Board must ensure the school is open but it must also be mindful of risk to pupils and adults alike. Perhaps in future we might text for help in clearing the ice and snow from our entrance and avenue.

We regret that our Christmas Craft Fair was another victim of the snow so we are considering holding this at another time in the New Year.

The Board has initiated a review of our school processes and policies with the help of our PAC. Our intention is to survey our First Class parents in particular after the holidays and a copy of the survey will also be on our website for anybody who wishes to contact us. We are so grateful to all the PAC members who do so much for all our pupils by selling Christmas trees, running fairs etc. and supporting in a myriad of other ways besides raising funds. And speaking of funds....

In a week which sees our classes performing their Nativity plays wouldn't we all like to have the Wise Man with the gift of Gold visit us? The reality for some of our pupils is that the IMF has had an impact on Santa as well as the rest of us. Should our ambitions in this school unintentionally add to your financial stress please let me know. After all, they say 'it's good to talk'.

On behalf of our Board of Management and our teachers, may I wish you and your family a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Nollaig Shona,

Vaughan Dodd
